On 14 October 1941 a flight of 256 Squadron arrived at Ballyhalbert to form 153 Squadron and began flying the next day. On the official formation of 153 Squadron on 24 October 1941, the Squadron was operational with Defiants on night patrols. It is said that when off duty and frequenting a public house in Bognor Regis, Max Aitken was unable to pay his bill and left his flying boots behind as payment. The disc design for units may have either one or two scrolls. The unit designation should always appear on the bottom scroll (AFI , paragraphs 3.4.2 and 3.4.3). Both scrolls are the same size, as outlined in AFI , paragraph 3.4.4. On 1 June 1992, 57 Squadron reformed at RAF Lyneham, operating the C-130K Hercules. Later, in 1999, 57 Squadron undertook the preparatory work for the introduction into RAF service of the C-130J Hercules, before the Squadron was disbanded again on 14 March 2002. Redesignated Patrol Squadron THIRTY THREE (VP-33) on 1 September 1948, the third squadron to be assigned the VP-33 designation.

During its time in Europe, one member of the squadron was awarded the BEM and another was mentioned in despatches. Formed as No 776 Squadron at Helensburgh in July 1941, having been unnumbered from the previous April. The squadron later moved to Swinderby, converted to the Light Anti Aircraft role in May 1943.
